Trying to keep our skin nice and acne-free is a lifelong battle for some of us. Someone women (and men) struggle with only a few spots here and there, a small minority never have breakouts... While the rest of us are stuck with yucky, temperamental skin that is forever giving us grief and making us shy away from any mirror close by.
But before you reach for the next best thing in skin creams or mud mask, first consider these top tips that can really help reduce the amount of breakouts you have - and they have nothing to do with expensive creams or cosmetics.
For many of us, wearing makeup is a daily necessity and whilst I know i often look forward to applying my m.a.c products & feeling made up and ready to take on the world - it can be our make up brushes, and not just our make up that is causing breakouts. Our makeup brushes overtime not only build up excess foundations, powders & eyeshadows, but also can harbour loads of bacteria & excess skin oils that are not apparent to the naked eye. A British study found that 72% of women never wash their brushes or sponges, even though they harbor dirt and bacteria which can cause breakouts.
Simply take your brushes & rinse well with soapy water and ideally gently rub them against your palm to encourage the excess makeup to break away from the bristles. The trick now, is to get yourself some Isopropyl Alcohol and a spray bottle. Take the spray bottle and fill half with water and half with Alcohol. Lightly spray the tips of your clean brushes with the spray mist, and then pat dry with paper towel.
I don't even like to contemplate where my phone has sat - public toilets, bars, the beach, my handbag, the takeaway store - so many germ filled places which have the potential to now be sitting on my face. It is recommended to take the same Isopropyl Alcohol and paper towel, and lightly rub the damp towel over your smartphone & its case. Ensure you clean the entire phone and this way you can be sure that your skin isn't coming into contact with germs & bacteria the next time the boyfriend calls.
Depending on what your cleaning routine is, a lot of us (over 50% of us actually) use our Bath towel more than once before washing it. That is fine, but ensure you are washing your towels on a regular basis. Hand towels, face washers and your regular towel can be the perfect environment to grow bacteria, so wash your towels often to ensure your face isn't dirty again before you step out of the shower. This goes for your pillowcases too. Ensure these are washed regularly, as dirty pillows are a growing contributor to acne and breakouts.
Dairy products—even those that are organic—contain cow hormones that stimulate your oil glands and your pores, leading to acne. Beware of hidden dairy in foods like salad dressing, protein bars, and shakes. And if you have to go there, stick to skim or better still, choose Coconut or Almond Milk which is better for your health too!
So many of us struggle to drink water and keep up our hydration, but keeping hydrate has SO MANY benefits! Not only will it keep us looking younger, but water also ensures toxins within our body are properly processed and flushed from our system. If you're not drinking enough water, these toxins back up like a blocked toilet, and the result is a miserable, tired body that starts to show the toxins on the outside, i.e. acne & breakouts.
